Men and women both practice different forms of hair removal for a number of different reasons......religious, cultural, sexual, medical and more. Over the years there have been many ways of removing hair within different cultures, but shaving is the most common by far.
Shaving is used many times in many different medical situations ie. getting a clean shave on an area that is just about to be operated on is critical predominately for hygiene reasons.
The clean shave is also very sort after in many religious situations. Buddhist and Christian monks frequently have all or part of their head shaved during their ordination.
The clean shave for sexual/cultural reasons is more common than you may think....for example....most women shave their armpits, their legs and quite a few shave their pubic area. Now, why do they do this? Most men don’t!.........Well they do it because it’s generally considered both culturally and sexually normal to do so.
In military situations most soldiers clean shave their head because while out in the field environment they are more likely to get lice, ticks or fleas with long hair. Also in sporting situations it can be common practice for example, a cyclist to shave his/her legs in an attempt to make them faster and also swimmers shave their legs to prevent drag in the water.
In some situations people’s hair is shaven as a form of punishment. After World War 2, head shaving was a common punishment in France, Netherlands and Norway for women who had collaborated with the Nazis and in particular for women who had collaborated sexually.
